What this setup creates

This studio setup features a female model against a vibrant red seamless background, creating a high-impact and confident aesthetic. The main light, a beauty dish with a grid, is positioned camera-left, providing soft yet defined illumination on the model's face and shoulders. A Nanlite PavoTube II 15C acts as a rim/hair light, placed above and slightly behind the model, adding separation and a subtle glow to her hair. A second Nanlite PavoTube II 15C serves as a fill light, positioned below and in front, gently lifting shadows for a smoother skin tone and overall low-contrast look. This combination results in a clean, polished portrait with a dramatic flair due to the bold background, suitable for fashion editorials, beauty campaigns, or striking personal branding. The setup emphasizes clarity and a confident mood, making it versatile for various creative concepts.

Light placement

The key light (Nanlite FC-120C with Beauty Dish, Diffuser, Grid) is placed just above the camera axis, angled slightly downwards towards the model, providing the primary exposure and shaping. A Nanlite PavoTube II 15C is positioned behind the model and above her head, creating a subtle highlight for hair and shoulder separation. A second Nanlite PavoTube II 15C is placed under the model's chin, angled upwards, acting as a controlled fill to gently lift shadows on the lower face and under the chin.

How to build it

This three-light setup focuses on efficiency and control for fashion portraits. The main light is a Nanlite FC-120C fitted with a beauty dish, diffuser, and a grid. Position this key light just above the camera and angle it slightly down; the grid is crucial for controlling light spill and concentrating the beam around the subject, preventing the red background from being over-illuminated and helping define contrast. The first Nanlite PavoTube II 15C is used as a separation light, placed behind the model and above her head to create a subtle edge highlight on the hair and shoulders, which is especially important against a dark background. The second Nanlite PavoTube II 15C functions as a subtle under-chin fill; position it below the model's chin, facing upwards, and ensure its power is low enough to merely lift shadows without making the face appear lit from below or flattening the shape established by the key light. The overall goal is a clean, polished look with strong subject-background separation, retaining shape and detail without over-lighting. The background is a strong red, kept clean by the controlled lighting.
